Every year an average of 100,000 motorists are fined for using a mobile phone whilst driving, according to a Freedom of Information request by insurer LV=.

However, this indicates that just a fraction of mobile phone use is detected as 33% of motorists admit to using their phone whilst driving.

More than three-quarters (77%) of those who use the phone whilst driving answer calls and half (49%) text.

Using a mobile phone whilst driving is dangerous for both the driver and for others on the road, with one study showing the habit was indulged by drivers twice as likely to drive erratically, or commit reckless driving, speeding and sudden braking.

In the course of the last 12 months 350,000 motorists have said they have either suffered an accident or come close to one due to being distracted by their phone whilst driving.
