The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has released a new health and safety guide for businesses, to provide them with advice on assessing risk without worrying to an excessive degree.

The guide features five principles, such as getting a senior management commitment on health and safety matters, and selecting an individual to be responsible for health and safety (or hiring an external specialist).

Other principles included are developing a structured approach towards the planning, monitoring and analysis of health and safety, filling in a suitable and sufficient risk assessment, and encouraging employees to support health and safety practices.

Minister of State for Housing and Local Government Grant Shapps MP lent his support to the guide, adding that health and safety had to be proportionate to risk and criticising tick-box bureaucracy.
