Aviva warns of Bonfire burglary bonanza

Homeowners are being warned by Aviva to beware vandalism, theft and burglary as the winter nights become longer and the clocks go back.

The insurer conducted research, surveying 16 police forces regarding last year from 30 October to 5 November, and found that average reported burglaries increased by more than a quarter (26%) compared to the average for the rest of the year.

This trend is reinforced by the 28% increase in burglary claims that Aviva itself received during Bonfire Night, a stark rise that made it the worst night of the year for burglaries.

Rob Townend, property claims director at Aviva, said that the time of year meant that the cover of darkness was available more often and that many homes were empty during the festivities of Bonfire Night.

Earlier in the month Towergate Insurance raised the same issue, and advised homeowners to take precautions to help deter burglars.
