Students advised to cover themselves

As the new university term draws nearer the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has reminded students of the importance of taking out appropriate insurance.

Students often take goods worth several thousand pounds to university, meaning that any loss through burglary or accident can be a painful financial hit.

The ABI advises students to have proper insurance, which may be through an existing household policy, and to shop around for the best deal.

Students are also advised to read the small print and know the detail of their coverage, not to leave valuable goods unattended and to lock doors and windows when leaving accommodation.

Director of General Insurance & Health Nick Starling said that whilst leaving home for the first time was exciting it could also be a time of anxiety, adding that insurance meant that there was one less thing to worry about.

In July specialist home insurer Hiscox urged homeowners to ensure that their gardens were properly insured should their furniture, equipment and other goods be damaged or stolen.
