Liberty Syndicates has announced that it is entering the agricultural and weather reinsurance market and to that end has hired of a team of specialist underwriters.

Operating from the insurer’s Paris office, the new team will underwrite agricultural and weather reinsurance programmes on a worldwide basis including North America, Latin America and Asia.

Jean-Christophe Garaix is taking up the position of class underwriter and will head the new line of business.

Liberty Syndicates’ chief underwriting office, Matthew Moore, says: “The team is highly-skilled and experienced … and their specialist knowledge is a strong addition to the syndicate.”

He adds: “With both the agricultural and weather reinsurance markets taking hold in developing economies, we see good opportunities for
continued growth in this line of business.”

Commenting on developments, Liberty Syndicates’ chief executive officer, Nick Metcalf, says: “The addition of agriculture reinsurance to our aviation, trade credit and political risk insurance reinsurance business enhances our offering.”

In August, Liberty Syndicates entered the UK and Irish motor insurance markets through the hiring of a team of specialist motor underwriters.
