Legal & General Group Chief Executive Tim Breedon has been nominated to become the next chairman of the ABI (Association of British Insurers).

His appointment will be formalised at the July Annual General Meeting, when incumbent Chairman Archie Kane will step down following a three year term in the post.

Breedon has been group chief executive of Legal & General since the start of 2006, and has sat on the firm’s board for the last eight years.

He has had a seat on the ABI board since 2007, and has described his nomination as a great honour.

Breedon went on to say that although the insurance sector did not play a part in the cause of the financial crisis it could have a role to play in the recovery.

ABI Director General Kerrie Kelly has thanked Kane on behalf of the board for the commitment and dedication of his three year term, and praised his clear and respected leadership.
