Motorists living in Chislehurst, Kent, or Wingate, Cleveland are three times more likely than average to have their car stolen, research from moneysupermarket.com has discovered.

The price comparison site announced the findings when it revealed the top 20 locations for theft claims on car insurance.

Big cities including Manchester, Sheffield and Bradford featured in the list.

Essex towns Romford and Ilford were also listed as car theft hotspots.

“What the research reveals is a broad mix of places across the country are at risk,” said Steve Sweeney, moneysupermarket.com head of motor insurance.

“No matter where you live, there is always a chance you could become a victim of theft.”

He added that those living in high risk areas should make extra effort to secure the cheapest possible car insurance.

“For those living in areas with a higher risk of theft of, or from their vehicle it is even more important to shop around and look for the best deals available for your car insurance,” he said.
