PJ Hayman has launched Free Spirit Travel for Treatment, a new policy aimed at UK nationals travelling abroad for medical procedures.

According to the firm, so called medical tourists are at risk if they take out only standard travel insurance.

While there are some specific policies that provide some protection for additional travel/accommodation costs they do not cover medical costs arising from treatment complications.

Whereas PJ’s new policy provides cover for complications arising from certain types of cosmetic surgery, dentistry and elective procedures.

Persons aged up to 74 can apply and their travelling companions can be included in the policy, which covers emergency medical expenses, repatriation and cancellation plus specific complications occurring after 48 hours and up to 31 days, whilst abroad.

Policyholders can also benefit from a medical emergency helpline which operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The scheme is underwritten by AXA.
