International general insurance and reinsurance group Brit Insurance Holdings PLC has announced that it is to open a representative office in Tokyo for Brit Insurance Limited and Brit Syndicates Limited.

The firm has also named Masaru Ito as its chief representative in the new office, taking effect from 1 July of this year.

He leaves behind Hannover Re Services Japan, where he worked for over a decade, and brings with him extensive knowledge and experience of the insurance sector in Japan.

He formerly worked for Zurich, American Re and Mitsui Bank, and will be responsible to the head of International Property Treaty, James Day.

Brit Insurance Japan is intended to provide Brit Insurance’s activities in London with underwriting support, in addition to its role enhancing reinsurance operations within Japan itself.

Brit Reinsurance’s CEO, Jonathan Turner, has stated that a local presence in the key markets of the world is part of the firm’s strategic approach, and warmly welcomed Masaru Ito to the firm.
