With the recession pounding the High Street, there is some welcome relief with the news that Hastings Direct is to invest in a string of new High Street shops.

The motor, home and travel insurance broker is taking on an innovative approach by offering its customers a broader choice of insurance options from new shops and fighting for the interest of its customer base.

Chairman Neil Utley has expressed his huge excitement at the firm’s intention to create the best multichannel insurance broker in the country.

Utley went on to say that Hastings’ customers would be able to access the firm through the internet, over the phone or in person at the new shops.

Initially a trio of new stores will be piloted, and should they prove successful a series of other shops will be opened in the coming months.

Chief executive officer Edward Fitzmaurice explained that the technological explosion over the last few decades has seen the internet and phone services act as drains on High Street insurance advice, as opposed to alternatives with the stores remaining.

Hastings’ unusual step of opening new stores comes as a particularly welcome move given the High Street’s suffering at the hands of the recession.

The BBC has reported that personal bankruptcies are at an all-time high of 19,062 over the last quarter, with the recession showing little sign of slowing.
