Car insurers snowed under by crash claims

Motor insurers have been inundated with claims this week following heavy snowfall across much of the UK.

AA’s call centres struggled to cope with the number of insurance claims, whilst esure reported a 100% increase in snow related claims.

AA said the increased number of claims were largely due to UK motorists being unfamiliar with driving in icy and snowy conditions.

Simon Douglas, AA spokesperson, said: “Many drivers are completely unused to driving in snow and ice and inevitably the claims are blowing in with the same force as the blizzards.”

Motorists calling AA’s claims centres frequently cited losing control on slippery roads and crashing into lampposts, trees, and other cars.

Adrian Webb, Head of Communications at esure, said: “The situation has been made much worse because garages and rescue services are also overwhelmed too and they are having to make their way to broken-down cars in exactly the same terrible conditions.”

Both the AA and esure advised that drivers should think twice before setting out in extreme weather conditions.

In related news, Saga Insurance – which only insures over 50s – reported no increase in claims during the snowy weather. Saga said older drivers have the experience to know when it’s best to stay at home.
