Legal & General has offered advice to full-time students to protect themselves against burglary.

Technical services’ chief Elaine Parkes suggests the basic step of making sure the property lived in is secure, which can greatly reduce the risk of burglary.

Parkes also urges students to ensure that their goods are appropriately protected by a suitable insurance policy.

Many students use laptops and other expensive goods which will be obvious targets in the case of a burglary.

Parkes states that such items should be added to a home contents policy to ensure adequate coverage.

She went on to state that it is important doors are locked, as insurers may only pay out if it is clear that a lock has been forced to gain entry.

This includes internal doors, so bedroom doors should have a lock put in place, and used whenever the room is vacant.

Legal & General’s household insurance policy also extends to students living away from their parents, up to a value of 15% of the parents’ sum insured.
