The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has launched the Campaign for Safe Young Drivers to help reduce the number of accidents and casualties involving young drivers.

The single biggest cause of accidental death for 15-24 year olds is dying in a car, and last year 5,419 people suffered death or serious injury in accidents involving at least one young driver.

In the first six months of driving two out of every five 17 year old males have an accident.

The ABI has also published research which shows strong public support for new measures designed to reduce the risk of injury and death for young people.

Of 3,742 people surveyed 76% agreed that after passing their test young drivers should be subject to restrictions and 71% support the idea of restricting the number of young passengers that a new young driver can have.

Sixty percent also support the proposal to change the driving test itself and 58% back a restriction on driving at 11pm-4am for new young drivers.

ABI Head of Motor James Dalton said that radical action was needed to cut the tragic waste of ife on the country’s roads, and called on the Government to back the campaign and take the recommendations forward.
