Aviva has confirmed that Lord Sharman of Redlynch retired as chairman of the board and as a director of the company on 30th June 2012, also stepping down as chairman of the insurer’s nomination committee and as a member of its corporate responsibility committee.
John McFarlane has taken up the post of executive chairman with effect from 1st July 2012.
Mr McFarlane joined the board of Aviva in September 2011 and was named as executive chairman following the abrupt departure of chief executive officer, Andrew Moss, whose position became untenable in May following a shareholder revolt over executive remuneration.
Once a new CEO is appointed, he will become non-executive chairman.
Commenting on Lord Sharman’s achievements at Aviva, Mr McFarlane said: “Under his leadership of the board, the company … developed into a single strong brand, easily recognisable in the markets where it operates.”
