Global insurance broker Willis Group Holdings has announced the appointment of John Cavanagh as the new chief executive officer of Willis Re.

Cavanagh, who assumes his new position with immediate effect, succeeds Steve Hearn, who was appointed Willis Global chairman and chief executive in December 2011.

In addition to acquiring a seat on the Willis Executive Committee Cavanagh also joins the Willis Re Executive team, alongside Chairman Peter Hearn and President Paddy Jago.

He has served as an executive vice president and managing director with Willis Re since 2009, and was previously joint-CEO of International Specialty reinsurance broker RK Carvill.

Peter Hearn said that Cavanagh had made an enormous contribution to the firm since joining it over two years ago and had an extremely productive working relationship with executive management.
