Munich Re has called for a new range of initiatives regarding climate change, with reinsurance operations CEO Torsten Jeworrek describing the switch from fossil fuels to renewable energy as the prime task of the century.

The firm forecast that the hopes of a successful conclusion to the negotiations in Durban, South Africa, were slim and warned that the Kyoto Protocol would expire without a successor.

Munich Re also said that obstacles needed to be removed from the path of renewable energy development, and said that the insurance industry can help in this regard.

The insurer called upon a core group of nations that have set climate change targets to take the lead and promote renwable energy.

In August Swiss Re warned that global warming was increasing the chance of subsidence occuring in Europe, with a 50% rise in France during the last two decades.
