Garages gridlocked with “stuff”
Multi-car households keep around £3,429 worth of items in their garage while £13,487 worth of vehicles are left on the road or driveway.
According to new research from Aviva, a quarter of multi-car families are parking a vehicle worth around £20,000 on the drive, rather than in the garage, despite worries that it could be broken into, stolen or vandalised.
Over a quarter of those questioned confessed that it was too much effort to garage a car, although 90% would change their ways should their vehicles come under attack.
When it comes to the contents of the typical garage, the research indicates that unwanted boxes from the last house move and the discarded “stuff” of consumerism are taking up a fair amount of space.
Only 38% of respondents were committed to clearing out their garage once a year and 10% said they never expect to attempt the task.
Meanwhile, a third of respondents were finding it difficult to find on-street parking and almost the same proportion struggled to fit all the cars in their household on the drive.
Aviva’s director of marketing for MultiCar insurance, Heather Smith, comments: “We understand that householders are busy, but if they gave their garage a bit of a clear out once in a while and parked one or more of their cars in it, they would have the peace of mind that one of their most valuable possessions is being fully protected – and they are likely to save on their car insurance too.”
