Markel establishes Dutch business
Specialist insurer Markel International has announced the opening of a new branch in Rotterdam.
The branch, due to open for business in September, will be the firm’s first in the Netherlands, with the firm forming a new business named Markel International Netherlands (in line with Markel International Sweden and Markel International Espana).
Markel International Netherlands will be established around a team of 21 insurance professionals who bring extensive experience of the Dutch market to the new business.
The Rotterdam office will particularly specialise in professional indemnity insurance, directors’ and officers’ insurance, general liability and engineering insurance.
Steve Carroll is to lead the new business, and formerly worked for Markel as divisional managing director of the retail practice in the UK.
Most recently Carroll was head of Markel International’s retail business both in the UK and overseas.
Chief Operating Officer William Stovin explained that the firm sought to enter new countries and regions, adding that the new branch and Dutch business was a great opportunity for Markel.
