Friends Life appoints independent director

Friends Life has appointed of Mary Phibbs as an independent director of the company and a member of its risk and compliance committee.

A chartered accountant with over 30 years of experience in financial services across the UK, Australia and Asia Pacific, Ms Phibbs returned to the UK in 2008 to join Standard Chartered Bank after holding a number of senior positions at companies including ANZ, National Australia Bank and Commonwealth Bank of Australia.

Most recently she served as interim chief risk officer at Allied Irish Banks and in addition, currently holds non-executive director positions at Northern Rock and The Charity Bank.

Commenting on the appointment, Friends Life chairman, Sir Malcolm Williamson, says: “Mary’s appointment is a timely one, not least as we work on shaping the new Friends Life business.”

Friends Life was launched by parent company, Resolution, in April following the merger of Friends Provident with AXA UK life insurance business acquired by Resolution.
