Opportunities for insurers as EU Data Protection Directive looms

Lloyd’s is warning that new EU data protection laws could have costly repercussions for businesses.

A final draft of the new Data Protection Directive is expected from Brussels by the end of the year and according to Lloyd’s, a recent spate of serious hacker attacks has added impetus to the overhaul of existing 15-year-old data protection laws.

Privacy and cyber liability underwriter at Brit, Ben Maidment, recommends a standalone insurance product for addressing exposures around data loss, and says he expects capacity in the European market to increase once demand for the product grows, with premiums eventually coming into line with the more mature US market.

Meanwhile, research from the Ponemon Institute reveals that in the UK, the average data breach incident cost organisations £1.9 million or £71 per individual record, an increase of 13% on 2009.
