Aviva confirms appointment of new chairman

Aviva has formally announced the appointment of John McFarlane as chairman, taking over from Lord Sharman of Redlynch at the end of June 2012.

In the meantime, Mr McFarlane will become a non-executive director of the group in September of this year and take up the role of deputy chairman at the beginning of next.

Currently a non-executive director of Royal Bank of Scotland and Westfield Holdings, he was for 10 years chief executive officer of Australia and New Zealand Banking Group.

Amongst other senior positions, Mr McFarlane has served as group executive director at Standard Chartered Bank, head of Citibank in the UK and Ireland, and non-executive director of the London Stock Exchange.

Commenting on the appointment, outgoing chairman, Lord Sharman of Redlynch, says: “I am very pleased that John is joining Aviva – he is an exceptional addition to an already strong board and will continue our focus on delivering shareholder value and serving all of Aviva’s constituents.”

Earlier this month, Aviva appointed Trevor Matthews as UK chief executive officer, replacing Mark Hodges who resigned unexpectedly to join Towergate, leading shareholders to voice concerns that Aviva’s board is now too lightweight.
