The Dragon Boat Tournament at Thorpe Meadows rowing lake was attended by over 1,000 BGL group staff and their families, with a total of 15 teams from the firm participating.

The teams raced three 40ft dragon boats and the event raised £45,000 for Marie Curie Cancer Care, BGL’s corporate charity partner, exceeding the initial target by £15,000.

Each one of the teams had to raise £2,000 to take part, through a mixture of fundraising events, sponsorship and supplier donations.

Group Chief Executive Peter Winslow said that the firm’s inaugural dragon boat contest brought out the competitive nature of its employees.

Winslow added his own delight at the sum raised for charity, with a further goal of raising £1m by the end of 2012, including £250,000 for Marie Curie Cancer Care.
