Unite raises health & safety alert
Unite is raising an alert over possible compromises in workplace health and safety which could be introduced under the “camouflage” of government measures aimed at cutting red tape for businesses.
The UK’s largest trade union is responding to proposals unveiled by employment minister, Chris Grayling, which it claims could result in health and safety inspections in Britain’s workplaces falling by 11,000 annually.
Unite general secretary, Len McCluskey, says: “Health and safety regulations have been developed over decades with the purpose of protecting the 29 million people currently at work in the UK.”
He adds: “Nothing keeps a rogue employer in line more than the fear of a knock at the door from a health and safety inspector and an appearance in court with all the bad publicity that generates.”
