Brodies expands Health & afety service

The Health & Safety Group at law firm Brodies LLP has launched two initiatives as part of its expanded service offering to businesses around the country.

With the first few hours after an incident of critical importance, the group now provide clients with a new round-the-clock health and safety emergency response telephone number.

Brodies’ H&S legal experts are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to provide immediate support and advice following major accidents and incidents.

The group has also launched a blog dedicated to health and safety issues, to raise awareness of and to discuss the recent and ongoing development of H&S legislation that has significantly increased the obligations placed on employers. Among the many issues that will be constantly under the spotlight are fatal accidents and inquests, HSE investigations, liability issues and directors’ responsibilities.

Elena Fry, partner and head of Health & Safety at Brodies, says: “Health and safety must sit at the heart of Scottish business. It’s a vital component in the broader success of all economic sectors – manufacturing and engineering, farming and rural business, construction and transport, energy and oil and gas, to name but a few. Our new emergency service will give clients round the clock guidance and crisis management support in the event of a major incident. Brodies’ immediate involvement ensures that the position of not only the business but employees and directors are protected.”

Paul Marshall, associate in the Health & Safety Group, comments: “Whilst we have the experience and knowhow to represent organisations and individuals facing prosecution for health and safety offences, we also work with clients proactively to keep them abreast of legal issues throughout the year – not just after an accident has occurred – such as advising and training on best practice and processes to reduce the risk of health and safety breaches. Our new blog will provide a further channel to keep in touch with clients and colleagues about the changing H&S landscape.”

Brodies’ Health & Safety Group is one of Scotland’s largest legal resources advising on this complex area of law. Investment in the practice area by the firm, and the launch of Brodies’ Aberdeen office in March, has led to a vastly increased capability to help clients across a variety of industry sectors on this key compliance issue.

As part of its current awareness raising programme, Brodies is also running health and safety seminars as part of a ‘Compliant or Complacent?’ series that examines the compliance issues that affect all businesses – including competition and bribery as well as health and safety.
