AEGON repays Dutch government €1.12bn

AEGON has repaid the Dutch government €1.125 billion, having recently completed a 10% equity issue that raised €903 million.

In late 2008, a rise in impairment charges and weak markets forced the insurer to strengthen its capital base with a €3 billion injection of cash from the Dutch government, and the group has now repurchased €2.25 billion core capital from the State.

Last year, AEGON began a restructure of its UK operations, refocusing the business on the “At Retirement” and “Workplace Savings” markets, and implementing a cost reduction strategy aimed at cutting operating expenses by 25% by the end of 2011.
