ECJ ruling slammed by insurers

| March 1, 2011 | 0 Comments

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruling made today has met with swift disappointment and disapproval from the UK insurance sector.

Under the ruling, women drivers may see rises in motor insurance premiums of 25% as their present status as lower risk than male drivers ends due to the ECJ considering this discriminatory and unacceptable.

Ageas has stated that taking gender into account can help both men and women get a better deal from insurance, and said that it will use the interim period to help facilitate a smooth transition when the ruling becomes effective.

RSA has attacked the ECJ ruling, describing it as flying in the face of common sense, preventing insurers using a legitimate risk factor and harming those it seeks to help.

RSA went on to say that honest drivers would end up paying the cost for an illogical change in the law.
