EIOPA completes top management appointments
The European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA) has appointed Carlos Montalvo as its first executive director.
In his new role, the 38-year-old will presides over the day-to-day management of EIOPA, serving a term of five years that can be renewed only once.
Mr Montalvo is currently acting secretary general of EIOPA, and since November 2007 has been Secretary General of CEIOPS (the Committee of European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Supervisors).
Previously, he was an insurance supervisor for the Dirección General de Seguros y Pensiones, the Spanish supervisory authority, where he headed the international area of the department’s work and coordinated issues relating to insurance groups and financial conglomerates.
Commenting on his appointment, Mr Montalvo, says: “Together with our chairman, Gabriel Bernardino, I will work hard to build EIOPA as a European independent and transparent supervisory authority.”
The top management of EIOPA is now in place, the board of supervisors having selected Victor Rod as vice-chairman, in January.
However, Mr Montalvo’s appointment is subject to confirmation by the European Parliament.
