Direct Line offers tips to beat winter weather

Homeowners concerned about the effects of severe winter weather on their homes can benefit from a Home Response 24 policy from Direct Line.

The policy offers a 24/7 service for emergencies in the home, including problems related to plumbing, electricity and heating.

Direct Line’s home expert Jenny Trueman explained that winter weather can cause a number of serious problems, but the risks of these can be mitigated by preventative maintenance work and a good home emergency policy.

The insurer advocates insulating pipes, and replacing washers on dripping taps to prevent freezing which can then block pipes.

In addition, chimneys should be swept before lighting the first winter fire and if the weather is very cold then heating should be left on at a low level to prevent burst pipes.

The BBC has today reported that the country has seen the earliest widespread snowfall for over a decade, with Scotland and North-East England seeing up to six inches of snow.
