With the weather growing colder and winter beginning to settle in, RAC has advised motorists to prepare their vehicles for the cold and snowy conditions.

RAC has recalled the numerous difficulties motorists faced last year, when the UK suffered a prolonged and especially cold winter, including getting stuck in snow, insufficient fuel and being unable to even leave the drive.

RAC has reported that in December and January motorists were 50% more likely to break down as in the summer months.

The top five reasons for call outs last winter were battery-related, tyre-related, road traffic accidents, alternators and engines becoming flooded.

Regional patrol manager David Hawes described last winter as challenging and unpredictable, and advised motorists to prepare their vehicles now to head off any potential bad weather.

Hawes also suggested that motorists ought to check their insurance make sure it’s both up to date and provides the coverage they require, and to change it or renew it, if necessary.

Aviva has already issued recent weather-related guidance, yesterday releasing tips for those affected by the flooding in Cornwall, and last week providing advice on how to protect properties against gales forecast in parts of England.
