Improved safety could reduce motor premiums

The key to reducing insurance premiums for young drivers is improving safety, according to young driver specialist, Marmalade.

Marmalade’s Nigel Lacy explained that a minority of young male drivers are increasing motor premiums across the board and that if they could be encouraged to drive more safely then it would lead to lower premiums.

The AA has recently released figures showing a 40.5% rise in the cost of car insurance generally, but a 46.6% rise for young male drivers to a substantial £2,457.

The youngest male drivers can face twice this premium cost, discouraging them from taking out insurance at all.

Young Marmalade is seeking to encourage safety, and is presently testing on-board tracking of behaviour of interest to insurers, such as excessive braking or cornering.

Last year almost a third of male drivers who died or were seriously injured on the roads were aged under 25.

Last month Provisional Marmalade, the specialist learner driver insurer, supported the suggestion by Road Safety Minister Mike Penning to make the driving test more difficult.
