Defaqto, the independent financial research firm, has analysed 288 motor insurance policies and discovered that 23% do not cover misfuelling.

In addition, 14% of policies do not provide coverage for motorists who run out of fuel.

Insight Analyst Mike Powell has said that drivers who put in the wrong sort of fuel face not only a hefty bill for repairs but may not be covered for the costs of towing their car to a garage.

Misfuelling is a common occurrence, with more than 100,000 incidents last year in the UK alone.

Powell advised motorists to be familiar with the extent and nature of the insurance coverage provided for by their policy.

In August, Defaqto revealed that just 21% of motor insurers provided legal cover for uninsured loss recovery as standard, with half of insurers including it as an optional extra and 28% not including the coverage at all.

To be sure that every aspect of desired coverage is included, motorists ought to browse carefully before buying insurance to make sure it meets their needs.
