Road rage benefits valued by scarce
Only one in eight car insurance policies offer any cover for road rage incidents, according to Defaqto’s latest report on the motor insurance industry.
Where they do exist, road rage benefit limits range from £500 to £5,000, with cover for professional counselling costs usually included, and sometimes cover for physical assault.
However, the firm’s general insurance insight analyst, Mike Powell, points out that exclusions can make claiming difficult.
Typically excluded incidents are those caused by a relative or a person known to the policyholder, or incidents caused or contributed to by anything said or done by the insured person or their passenger.
Mr Powell cautions: “In the heat of the moment, many people may find it difficult to stay calm, and it could therefore be hard to prove to the insurer that the insured person did not contribute to the situation by anything that was said.”
The independent research firm has also discovered that cover for road rage incidents is an important differentiator for consumers, particularly among drivers aged 55-plus.
