Employers kept in the dark over health concerns

Only 4% of employees in the UK would approach their boss with a health concern, research from Aviva suggests.

The insurer’s latest Health of the Workplace study also reveals that only 1% would approach their HR department with a health issue.

Nearly a quarter of employees surveyed saw their reticence as a matter of personal privacy, however, 21% thought that admitting to health concerns could affect their work prospects, and 11% claimed they simply didn’t trust their bosses with such information.

By contrast, employers are convinced that they are doing all they can to nip any potential staff problems in the bud.

Thirty-nine per cent of firms questioned said they made a point of identifying any employee issues and 42% claimed to operate an open door policy.

Aviva Health principal clinical consultant, Dr Doug Wright, comments: “The breakdown in communication between employers and their staff means that health risks such as stress in the workplace are not being effectively managed.”

He adds: “Lack of employee engagement will also hinder an employer’s ability to intervene early and offer their employees the right support at the right time.”
