Research carried out by moneysupermarket.com has identified the top 20 hotspots for home insurance claims for theft.

While London households are the most likely to make a theft-related claim, with postcodes in the Capital taking half of the top 20 places, a Manchester postcode holds the top spot for the highest number of theft claims.

The analysis involved over 1.1 million home insurance enquiries made on the website during 2009, with the top 10 as follows:

Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester M21; Blackheath, London SE3; Hammersmith, London W6; Finsbury Park, London N4; Rounday, Leeds LS8; Bestwood Village, Bulwell, Old Basford, Nottinghamshire, NG6; Wythenshawe, Northenden Manchester M22; Chiswick, Gunnersbury, Turnham Green, London W4; Austhorpe, Leeds LS15; Battersea, London SW11.

After that comes: Upper Holloway, Archway, London N19; Gerrards Cross, Horn Hill, South Bucks SL9; Southwark, London SE1; Bishopston, Bristol, BS7; Beckenham, Greater London BR3; Apperley Bridge, Bradford BD10; Forest Hill, Honour Oak, London SE23; Enfield, London N13; Brixton, London SW2 and Redland, Montpelier, Bristol BS6.

Moneysupermarket.com head of home insurance, Julie Owens, comments: “Major cities like London and Manchester and affluent areas are a target for criminals and the research highlights a broad mix of areas across the North and South of the UK, so it is clear that no matter where you live there is always a risk your home could become a victim of theft.”

According to the Association of British Insurers, 80,000 domestic burglary claims totalling £84 million were made last summer alone.
