International speciality property/casualty insurer and reinsurer Catlin Group Limited has announced the appointment of Peter Schmidt as chief executive officer of Reinsurance in Europe.

At the same time he will take on the role of Catlin Re Switzerland CEO.

Schmidt joined the firm at the start of the month, and is directly responsible to Group Chief Underwriting Officer Paul Brand, who is also CEO of the firm’s European operations.

Prior to joining the firm he worked as chief market officer for Atradius N.V., and earlier in his career held a number of senior posts with Swiss Reinsurance Company.

In his new position Schmidt will be responsible for the activities of Catlin Re Switzerland, and for the reinsurance underwriting operations of Catlin’s European offices.
