Long-haul holidays rise in popularity

More and more Britons are opting for long-haul travel, with nearly a quarter of policies sold by swiftcover.com being taken out by British travellers heading for far flung lands.

Only five years ago the figure was one in five, with the recent rise backed up by research commissioned by swiftcover.com.

According to research 23% of people would consider a tropical island to be their ideal holiday destination, with a world cruise, ancient ruins or an off-the-beaten-track country (such as India) each being preferred by 14%.

When it comes to activies 23% indicated they would love to go white-water rafting, 17% would like to drive a fast car around a racetrack and 16% dream of taking a parachute jump.

Travel Underwriting Manager Roman Bryl has said that the desire for luxury is unsurprising, but the rise in popularity of more adventurous activites is interesting.

Bryl went on to say that those taking long-haul holidays to need to make sure they have adequate insurance, adding that swiftcover.com’s Gap policy is specifically designed to cater to the needs of backpackers.

Worryingly, the rising trend of long-haul holidays is occurring whilst many Britons are neglecting the necessary jabs to holiday in safety.

Research from travel insurer LV= indicates that 26% of travellers recently went without jabs for diseases such as typhoid and diptheria, exposing themselves needlessly to preventable illnesses.
