OS OpenData reveals UK fraud landscape
Ordnance Survey (OS) has recently launched OS OpenData, a free-to-use mapping and data portal that allows insurance firms and banks to identify geographical patterns in fraud.
The map-maker claims that changes in fraudulent activity can become much clearer when OpenData is used alongside an organisation’s own intelligence, resulting in faster and more intelligent decision making.
OS finance sector manager, Sarah Adams, explains: “When you view this type of data as a huge spreadsheet the patterns are very hard to detect.”
She adds: “As soon as you apply a geographic context it immediately becomes clear where change is occurring, and a bank or insurance firm can then take the appropriate action based on their exposure.”
The fraud maps reveal some dramatic changes, including in West Berkshire, which saw a large fall in fraudulent between 2008 and 2009, and in Edinburgh, where incidents of ID fraud have almost halved.
A free half-day seminar for potential OpenData users is being hosted by the Association of British Insurers in the City of London, on 29th June.
