Air France insurer, AXA, is to appeal against a $1 million compensation award made by a Brazilian Court to the family of a victim of last year’s Air France crash.
All 228 passengers and crew died when Air France Flight 447 from Rio de Janeiro to Paris crashed into the sea on 1st June 2009.
The cause of the crash has not yet been established as the plane’s black box is still missing but there is evidence to suggest that engines may have stalled.
However, last week, a Brazilian civil court judge ordered Air France to pay compensation for the death of Marcelle Valpacos Fonseca Lima, a 41-year-old who at the time of her death was a state attorney general.
According to reports, AXA is demanding that compensation should be decided by a committee that was set up after the crash to decide the criteria for fair compensation, rather than a court.
