Royal London and Royal Liver explore merger
Royal London is reported to be in talks with Royal Liver regarding a takeover.
Established as a friendly society in 1850, Royal Liver offers a range of financial products including mortgage and insurance services, whereas Royal London is recognised as the UK’s largest mutual life and pensions provider.
The idea of a merger between the two was first mooted in 2007, when talks were abandoned at an early stage.
Royal Liver has since held talks with LV=, negotiations taking place as recently as October 2009.
The search for a partner may have been prompted by the Financial Services Authority’s concerns over mutual’s balance sheets, particularly with regard to their with-profits funds.
