ABI offers advice to BA travellers

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has issued advice to travellers likely to be affected by the proposed industrial action at British Airways (BA).

If the strike proceeds, the first step is to contact BA to discuss the options available.

Where alternative travel plans are made, travel insurance can usually be altered to cover the new arrangements.

In the event of flight delays, passengers may be able to claim under their travel insurance, providing bookings have been made before the prospect of a strike could have reasonably been foreseen.

Where travel plans have to be abandoned, travel policies may provide cover in the form of a fixed lump sum.

However, the ABI warns that cover in these circumstances will vary because it is based on specific risks that may not include industrial action.

The Association’s director general, Nick Starling, comments: “Customers should check their travel insurance, and talk to their travel insurer if they need clarification on the extent of cover provided.”

According to latest reports on the situation at BA, yesterday’s talks to try to avert strike action ended without agreement but a High Court judgement on the legality of the proposed strike is imminent.

The airline’s management is seeking an injunction to prevent industrial action on the grounds that the strike ballot is invalid because it included ex-employees.
