Drivers beware 19th December

The 19th December will be a good day to leave the car behind and take the bus, Virgin Money Car Insurance is predicting.

As the pressures of the festive season mount, the last Saturday before Christmas becomes the most dangerous day of the month for drivers, with claims up around 40% on the average.

The risk of both accidents and thefts peak as a result of the late shopping rush, which is shortly followed by the two safest days on the road in December: Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Insurance claims on Christmas Day are a seventh of the average, while Boxing Day claims are less than half the average, according to the insurer.

Virgin Money spokesman, Grant Bather, says: “Christmas is a time for giving but maybe drivers should be giving the car a miss on December 19th if they want to keep their no-claims bonus.”

The research also reveals that the worst day of the year for car insurance claims is in October when the clocks go back, and that most car claims occur in the final three months of the year, accounting for 30% of all claims.
