Legal & General Group Plc has announced the appointment of John Stewart as non-executive chairman.

Stewart succeeds Sir Rob Margetts on 1 March 2010, at which time Sir Rob will stand down from Legal & General’s board.

Sir Rob has been with the firm for 13 years, the last nine of which have been as chairman.

In the mid to late 90s Stewart served as Group CEO of Woolwich PLC, after which he served as deputy CEO of Barclays and chief executive of National Australia Bank.

Vice Chairman Sir David Walker warmly welcomed Stewart to the firm following the board’s unanimous decision to appoint him as chairman.

Walker also paid tribute to Sir Rob’s contribution to the firm in his time as chairman, praising his wise counsel and clear leadership over a number of years.
