Kiln, the Lloyd’s insurance and reinsurance underwriting group, has announced that it is entering the space market.

The move is being supported by the appointment of specialist space underwriter, Laurent Esquirol, who will write business from the group’s Paris office.

Mr Esquirol has 15 years’ experience in the sector, having worked for seven years in the space industry before moving to SCOR as senior space underwriter.

Holding this post for eight years, he is credited with having developed SCOR’s space book into a successful business.

The role with Kiln commences on 2nd November, when Mr Esquirol will join aviation underwriter, Philippe Daouphars, at the Paris office.

The firm says that capacity for the new account will be supplied by Kiln syndicates 510 and 1880, subject to Lloyd’s approval.

Kiln’s regional managing director for Europe, Olivier Terlinden, says “it is fantastic to be able to attract someone of Laurent’s calibre and experience”, adding “Paris has long been recognised as a focal point for space insurance”.

In other news, Kiln has today announced that it is launching a new specialist team to underwrite international logistics risks.

Peter Rogers will head the unit which will be based in Ipswich and form part of the marine and special risks division of Kiln Syndicate 510.

The team will specialise in providing cover for clients in the freight and transport industry, plus ports and terminal operators.

Mr Rogers will also have responsibility for developing Kiln’s international logistics sector globally.
