BNP and Fortis acquire Italian insurer
France-based BNP Paribas and Belgium-based Fortis have agreed terms to take a majority stake in the non-life insurance business of Italy’s UBI Banca.
Fortis and BNP will pay €120 million in cash for a 50% plus one share stake in UBI Assicurazioni, which provides property and casualty insurance in Italy.
A further payment of €40 million could be required, depending on the unit’s future performance.
The transaction is expected to close by the end of the year.
UBI Banca is Italy’s fifth-largest retail bank with a market share of around 6%.
