Home insurance claims subside
Home insurance claims across the UK numbered 373,000 in the first six months of 2009, compared with 527,000 in the same period of 2008, and the average value of a claim for the periods stood at £735 and £918 respectively.
The figures appear in Sainsbury’s Home Insurance Claims Index, which tracks both the volume and value of claims on a six monthly basis.
Last year’s high levels of storm damage were responsible for the 2008 surge, with Sainsbury’s estimating that there were around 166% more home insurance claims linked to this category during the first half of last year, than in the same period of 2009.
In addition, the average claim for storm damage in March 2008 stood at £460 but for the same month of 2009 dropped to just £93.
Sainsbury’s home insurance manager, Lucy Hunter, comments: “The first quarter of 2008 brought particularly severe conditions, and storm damage in that quarter accounted for 21.8% of all claims made.”
She adds: “For the six months overall, storm damage was still the second most prevalent claim in 2008, accounting for 15.9% of claims made. In the first half of 2009 it only accounted for 8.5% of claims.”
