Motorists prefer NCDs over claims

Insurers must be saving money because large numbers of motorists are so fearful of losing their no claims discounts (NCD) that they opt out of making legitimate claims.

So says Confused.com, which has been researching the delicate relationship between car owners and their NCDs.

According to the website, 38% of drivers equate making a claim with the loss of their NCD and higher premiums, and would therefore resist making one.

Younger drivers are most sensitive to the threat, with 66% of 18 to 24-year-olds likely to avoid making a claim, while 65% of over 55s are happy to make use of their car insurance, regardless of the affect this could have on premiums.

Confused.com’s head of car insurance, Will Thomas, acknowledges that the NCD is useful when it comes to getting a reasonable quote but advises that shopping around for the best policy can equally keep costs down, while at the same time providing the most suitable cover.
