EU travellers unaware of free health cover

More than half of Brits could be duped into paying for travel insurance in Europe because they’re unaware of the free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

A poll by moneysupermarket.com found 51% of UK adults don’t know about the benefits of the EHIC when travelling in Europe.

Furthermore, 43% of those polled still believe the defunct E111 will cover their health needs for free or reduced cost in Europe.

The EHIC replaced the E111 in 2006, yet only a third of Brits are familiar with the card.

The card is the only recognised document for medical treatment overseas, and a separate card must be carried by every family member.

“Medical treatment in mainland Europe doesn’t come cheap and holidaymakers stand to lose out and suffer unexpected financial pain,” said Maxine Baker, moneysupermarket.com’s travel insurance manager.

“I am surprised that nearly three years after the card has been launched, Brits awareness is still disturbingly low,” she added.

Moneysupermarket.com recommends taking out a travel insurance policy as well as using the EHIC.
