Fortis Insurance UK has won a £20 million contract to provide car insurance to Toyota customers.

Fortis said the deal, agreed with Toyota’s UK insurance partner Aioi, will help it build on its position as the UK’s third largest motor insurer.

Aioi Motor and General will continue to underwrite claims, while Fortis will take charge of sales, administration, and claims services. Fortis will also reinsure some of the business underwritten by Aioi.

The three-year contract will create around 70 new UK jobs at offices in Stoke-on-Trent and Gloucester.

Barry Smith, Fortis UK chief executive, said he is “looking forward” to working with Aioi.

“This new relationship is a significant step forward in our multi-channel distribution strategy, reinforcing our strength in the private car insurance market,” Smith said.

“Our customer-focused approach and market-leading efficiency have been key ingredients for our growth in the affinity arena, where we have recently secured a number of new relationships.”

Final binding terms of the partnership are expected to be agreed in the next two months.

Toyota said the company is “delighted” to be working with Fortis.
