New AIG chief makes his mark

American International Group’s (AIG) new chief executive is already making his mark with regard to the group’s painful restructure, Reuters has reported.

Robert Benmosche took up his post on 10th August, replacing Edward Liddy.

He has since decided to hold onto an investment advisory business unit comprising Sagepoint Financial, Royal Alliance, and FSC Securities.

All three form part of the group’s retirement services operations and the move is being seen by some as a threat to AIG’s existing restructuring plan.

The 65-year-old Mr Benmosche is best known for his stint as chief executive at Metropolitan Life, which demutualised under his leadership back in 2000.

In related news, the 80% state-owned AIG has appointed Harvey Golub as its chairman and amended its bylaws to ensure the role is independent.

Mr Golub also replaces Mr Liddy, who previously held the roles of both chief executive and chairman.
