Hibernian Aviva sets out Ireland’s weight problem

Hibernian Aviva Health has been weighing in residents of Ireland to find that 48% are either overweight or dangerously overweight.

The health insurer’s findings are unsurprising, given that almost a quarter of those involved in the research admitted to taking no physical exercise.

The firm advises that in addition to weight management, exercise reduces the risk of heart disease, which accounts for 36% of all deaths in the Republic.

A clear gender bias emerged from the research, with 61% of males versus 39% of females carrying extra pounds.

County Tipperary was home to the most blubber, with approximately 58% of residents in the overweight category, while County Kerry reported the lowest proportion of overweight residents at 41%.

According to the insurer, a healthy waist measurement for a woman is less than 80cms / 32inches and for a man is less than 94cms / 37 inches.

Those with larger circumferences should consider a weight loss programme immediately.
